JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Sanitation Manager
REPORTS TO: Operations Manager
FLSA STATUS: Salary – Exempt
PURPOSE:
The Sanitation Manager provides strong leadership to the Sanitation team to achieve full plant compliance with all personnel safety, food safety, sanitation/cleaning requirements pertaining to all federal, state and customer requirements and the Company’s own food safety and manufacturing standards. They must meet or exceed guidelines as they pertain to the facility, equipment, and industry standards for sanitation and SQF.
The Sanitation Manager is a working position who may work in a team environment, or on specific assigned projects. Duties will also include helping to develop new methods, staff training and evaluation, and completing daily reports. Special Project Assignments may occasionally fluctuate between inside & outside environments, scheduled work shifts, scheduled workdays.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversees and manages the Sanitation Supervisor and crew to ensure compliance to all Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures and timely startup of the plant each production day
- Manages sanitation employees and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of sanitation department
- Responsible for directing Crew/Supervisor(s) on weekend for sanitation/janitorial duties (20-25 employees)
- Responsible for completion of corrective action for sanitation audits
- 5’s program (area champion) for Sanitation Dept
- Inventory of sanitation supplies
- Provide expertise and leadership in Sanitation programs
- Production/Sanitation Plant Employees
- Responsible for preparing and maintaining all requisite documentation for successful implementation of SQF 2000 levels 1,2, and 3 as it pertains to sanitation and related activities
- Keeps sanitation crew focused on aesthetic conditions of equipment and plant the effective elimination of bacterial load
- Establish standards and procedures for work of staff; will be required to lead by example. Assist in the development, organization, and participation of staff in departmental training programs; provide on-going supervision and coaching to improve operations with positive reinforcement and goals.
- Maintain records and daily logs. Prepare periodic activity and reports for review.
- Share in the accountability with cohort for all departmental stock and inventory control. Periodically inventories supplies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Principles and processes for providing business sanitation and cleaning services, includes needs assessment, meeting quality standards, and evaluation of results.
- Business and management principles involved with planning, resource allocation, and leadership technique.
- Ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and effectively.
- Reading and comprehension abilities for proper use of chemicals
- Must be able to follow OSHA guidelines when using and storing chemicals.
- Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of national Food safety initiatives by strict compliance to all Dept. of SQF and AIB safety protocols and procedures.
- Must be able to demonstrate and understanding of the basics of food safety, good manufacturing practices (GMPs), HACCP, microbiology, and sanitation procedures to enable them to perform daily tasks routinely and in a consistent and disciplined way.
- As needed, must be able to work all shifts, weekends.
- Knowledge and understanding of principles and methods of training and instruction.
- General knowledge of all cleaning equipment operation.
- Excellent knowledge of production machines.
- Ability to work in a Team environment in a positive manner of respect, cooperation, and flexibility.
- Proactive and self-starting, working in a culture of goal setting with continuous improvement focus and training and mentoring of team members.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
- Minimum seven years’ experience in a Quality Control managerial capacity, ideally in Food and Beverage.
- Preferred GFSI certification and / or SQF practitioner.
- Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations applicable to the quality and safety of food.
EQUIPMENT, MACHINES AND SOFTWARE USED:
This position requires the regular use of a computer and knowledge of Microsoft Office and Outlook and scheduling software. May use the following machine, equipment, and tools. This will depend on assignment: commercial floor cleaning machine, scrubber and buffer, steam cleaners, pressurized air hoses, carpet and vacuum and an assortment of hand-held cleaning tools.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, squat, kneel, walk, use hands to finger, grasp, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions. The individual is frequently required to push and pull. The individual is occasionally required to climb, balance, reach, and lift. The physical requirements of this position call for the ability to exert up to 55 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that may be encountered while performing the essential functions of this position. Inside environmental conditions: Typical work environment in a variety of facilities, protection from weather conditions; Exposure to dusts, powders, strong aromas of spices. Occasional outside environmental conditions: Typical regional weather conditions. Noise: There is moderate level of noise while operating commercial cleaning equipment. Occupational hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as occasionally working on ladders, exposure to cleaning chemicals, working on wet floors, long hours on concrete floors. Unpleasant tasks: Duties may include handling garbage, strongly unpleasant odors, etc.
